What is a Letter Before Action?

A Letter Before Action (LBA) is a formal demand for payment that must be sent before starting court proceedings. It is required by the Pre-Action Protocol for Debt Claims. The letter gives the debtor 30 days to respond and warns that court action will follow if payment is not made. Around 80% of debts are resolved after receiving a properly drafted LBA.

For debts under £10,000, the claim is allocated to the small claims track. For debts between £10,000 and £25,000, the fast track applies.
